Qui êtes-vous? Pouvez-vous nous retracer votre parcours?

Je suis Albertine, Albertine Meunier. Je suis à la fois moi et une autre.
Albertine (alias Catherine Ramus), c’est mon identité-tampon, mon identité d’artiste. J’ai (Catherine Ramus) un parcours professionnel plutôt scientifique au départ, j’ai démarré en tant qu’ingénieur en optoélectronique. Avec l’arrivée d’Internet, j’ai rapidement basculé de cette sphère scientifique de l’optique vers le réseau maillé d’Internet. Des salles fermées blanches ou noires, je suis passée au monde d’Internet ouvert et sans limites.
Je me suis engouffrée dans cet univers où tout semblait possible : apprendre toute seule, construire, communiquer, etc. Très progressivement, j’ai débuté mes actions artistiques sur le réseau en publiant des collages constitués de textes et d’images animées. Année après année, j’ai multiplié et enrichi ma pratique en manipulant l’Internet, le téléphone mobile, les supports vidéos…
Aujourd’hui, je publie toutes mes créations sur le réseau. Tout est visible et téléchargeable en ligne. Être artiste du net, c’est surtout sentir l’Internet comme une matière, comme une respiration. Je joue avec le web, le malaxe. Je tente de le comprendre, de le digérer. J’essaye également de m’en protéger, dans cette hyperconnectivité qui me guette parfois. Albertine est là pour me montrer les frontières du web et du réel, et m’empêche de totalement basculer dans le réseau.

Vous vous intéressez au réseau depuis des années. D’un point de vue artistique que s’est-il passé pour vous ces 15 dernières années sur Internet ? Comment avez- vous perçu, vécu et traversé la naissance et l’adolescence du web ?

Je crois que j’ai découvert Internet dans les années 1995. Je me souviens de ma première connexion sur ce world wide web sur le fameux navigateur Mosaic…
J’ai vraiment changé de vie, ou tout du moins développé une vie multiple, à ce moment-là. Tout semblait subitement possible, ouvert et à portée de main. Dans mon souvenir, il y a cette couleur bleue du lien hypertexte, cette capacité de créer des pages Internet si facilement et de les publier sur le réseau, il y a aussi cette souris que l’on bougeait sans cesse à une époque parce que cela n’allait pas assez vite. Et surtout le début de ce tout nouvel espace de copie.
Je me souviens de ces tendres floppy disc et de ce geste que nous avons tous appris :
« Ctrl C / Ctrl V » ou « Pomme C / Pomme V » ou « Clic droit / enregistrer sous ».
Pour moi, ce geste est fondamental dans notre pratique du réseau. Fondamental pour comprendre, pour apprendre, pour connaître, pour découvrir. J’aime ce média transparent, copiable, hackable, transformable, modulable, montrable…
Et puis durant ces 15 années, il y a eu la naissance de très grands acteurs du réseau; à commencer par Google, Facebook, puis Twitter… sur lesquels je me suis placée pour construire des œuvres artistiques. Je pense notamment au Voyage Immobile, au Counter Googling, à la Big Picture, à My Google Search History, à Stweet, à Around The World… où j’ai tenté de me jouer des mécanismes offerts et de les détourner ou de les mettre en scène très différemment.

Quelle est, pour vous, la portée de la notion de réseau? D’un point de vue social, politique, artistique, philosophique comment le réseau a-t-il modifié notre rapport au monde, à l’espace et au temps, nos usages, nos pratiques, notre façon d’être, de travailler, de penser, de partager, d’échanger, de collaborer, de créer…?

Le réseau grandit, et je mesure que ma vie rétrécit au fil des jours dans une sorte d’intimité collective.
Internet est quelque chose de totalement inédit et transpose tout sur et dans un mode binaire. Il transforme le temps, l’espace, les corps, les pensées, dans un fonctionnement entre zéro et un.
L’inventaire des possibles, et ils sont immenses. J’évoquerai cet atelier Internet que je fais avec des femmes de plus de 80 ans. C’est tout simplement une révélation: la vie est de nouveau devant elles, et non pas derrière. Comme si Internet et la mise en réseau — la mise en commun, la mise en lien — reculait le moment de la mort, ou du moins écartait l’angoisse pour se remplir de son vivant. Car je remarque qu’avec Internet, ces femmes de plus de quatre-vingts ans ont envie : envie de faire, envie de dire, envie de voir, envie d’écouter, envie de montrer et de se montrer, envie de jouer avec soi et avec l’autre…
Chaque jour, ces manifestations de désir me surprennent un peu plus…

Dans le futur, le web sera-t-il encore un territoire intéressant à explorer, pensez-vous qu’il sera un terrain fertile pour la création, pensez-vous qu’il générera ou produira des formes hybrides où le monde physique et le monde virtuel fusionnent, se frottent et se télescopent?

Le réseau est sans cesse mouvant, d’une richesse incroyable, rempli d’une quantité de contenus infinis. Aujourd’hui, la tendance est vers l’ouverture des  données de plus en plus accessibles,  de plus en plus porteuses de sens grâce à la sémantique. Ces données, formant la matière de création numérique, ne sont vraiment pas prêtes de se tarir. Bien au contraire, de nouveaux territoires, de nouveaux mélanges… vont surgir et devenir pour qui sait les saisir de véritables matières à créer.
Albertine se demande, finalement, si avec toutes ses créations, elle ne cherche pas à comprendre, à capter, à capturer le réseau; à tenter de saisir ses nuances, ses fonctionnements, ses subtilités, son infinitude, sa permanence.
En somme, Albertine essaye de toucher un peu de cet insaisissable. Je suis le mouvement de cet Internet parfois à bon pas, parfois haletante, parfois essoufflée à courir de lien en lien, un peu mutante aussi. Je deviens hypertexte, hypermédia, hypernet…

Who are you? Can you tell us in a few words what you have been doing these last few years?

My name is Albertine, Albertine Meunier. I’m myself, and I’m also someone else.
Albertine (alias Catherine Ramus) is my buffer self, my artist self.
My (Catherine Ramus) professional background began on the scientific side, I started out as an optoelectronic engineer. When the Internet got here, I quickly slipped from the scientific world of optics into the mesh of the Internet network.
I left empty black and white rooms for the open and limitless world of the Internet.
I plunged into a universe where everything seemed possible: self-teaching, creation, communication, etc. Bit by bit, I started my artistic activities on the net by publishing collages made up of texts and animation. Year after year, I enriched and expanded my practice by manipulating the Internet, cell phones, and video… Today, all of my work is published on the net.
Everything can be seen and downloaded online. Being a net artist means above all feeling the Internet like it was matter, like something you breathe. I play with the net, I knead it. I try to understand it, to digest it. I also try to protect myself from it, from the hyperconnectivity that lies in wait.
It’s up to Albertine to show me the limits between the web and reality, and to prevent me from sinking completely into the web.

You have been involved in network activities or netbased projects for many years. From an artistic perspective, what has been happening in this field? What have you witnessed or found interesting about the internet? What is your experience and feeling about the birth and the adolescence of the internet?

I think I discovered the Internet around 1995. I remember connecting for the first time on the world wide web using the famous navigator Mosaic…
My life truly changed or, at least, other lives sprang from that life, in that instant. Suddenly everything seemed possible, open, within reach.
In my memory there’s the blue of the hypertext link, the ability to create Internet pages so readily and to publish them on the net, and there’s also that mouse that you would constantly be moving because things were never going fast enough and, above all, the beginning of this entirely new copy space.
I remember those delicate floppy disks and the motions that we learned: Ctrl C / Ctrl V or Apple C/ Apple V or right click to save under.
That movement is fundamental in our work on the net. Fundamental in order to understand, to learn, to know, to apprehend, to discover.
How I like this media which is transparent, copyable, hackable, transformable, modulable, showable… And in those 15 years, majors players were born on the web, starting with Google, Facebook, and then Twitter… where I set up shop to work on my artistic creations. I’m thinking for example of Immobile Voyage, Counter Googling, the Big Picture, My Google Search History, Stweet, Around the World… where I attempted to play with the tools at my disposal and adapt and adjust them, or to bring them to life in different ways.

From a social, political, artistic or philosophical point of view, what is the impact of the concept of the network? How has the Internet and the idea of the network modified your attitude and practice, your relation to space and time, and the way we behave, work, think, share, exchange, collaborate, create…?

The web is growing, and I realize that my life has shrunk with the passing days into a kind of collective intimacy.
Internet is unlike anything that has come before it, it envelops and transforms everything into binary mode. It transforms time, space, bodies, thoughts, into zeros or ones.
The list of possibilities is endless but I’ll just talk about this Internet workshop I lead for women over 80. Simply put, it’s a revelation: for them, life is no longer a thing of the past, but of the future.
It’s as if the Internet, and becoming part of a network, the sharing, the connecting pushed the time of death back or at least pushed away the fear and made it possible to become fulfilled whilst alive.
Because what I’ve noticed is that with the Internet, the women over eighty years of age feel desire: the desire to do, to say, to see, to hear, to show and be shown, to play with themselves and with others…
Every day, the ways in which they expose these desires surprise me more and more. The Internet makes us more alive. More immortal perhaps… it makes us become truly human.

In the future, do you think internet will still be an interesting territory to explore ? Do you think it can be a fertile space for creation? Do you think it will produce interesting, mutating, hybrid artistic forms where the physical world and the virtual world can mutate, merge, fuse or collide?

Certainly!
The net is in constant motion, incredibly rich, full of an infinite amount of content. Today the trend is towards opening up to ever more accessible data, data that is more and more meaningful thanks to semantics. This data, which is the stuff of which digital creation is made, is definitely not about to run out. It’s the opposite, new territories, new images, new compositions, etc., are being generated and are becoming, for those who know how to use them, veritable materials for creation.
Albertine is actually wondering if, with all of her creations, she isn’t really trying to understand, to capture, to collect the web; trying to seize upon its nuances, its intricacies, its subtleties, its infinitude, its permanence.
Basically, Albertine is trying to reach out to the unreachable.
I follow the Internet’s movements at times with a healthy stride, sometimes panting for breath, and sometimes breathless from running from link to link, a bit of a mutant, myself. I’m becoming hypertext, hypermedia, hypernet….

What are, for you, the most important, emblematic, essential, exemplary websites of the last 15 years?
